On September 10, tech giants Apple and Google encountered significant legal defeats that will require them to pay substantial fines.
The European Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that Apple is required to pay Ireland 13 billion euros due to a case initiated in 2016. This case involves Irish tax rulings that significantly reduced the tax burden for the company, according to Reuters.
Today is a huge win for European citizens and tax justice,
wrote Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, on X.
Additionally, on the same day, Google was defeated in court and must now pay a fine of 2.42 billion euros imposed by the EU’s antitrust regulator in 2017.
The fine was imposed over allegations that Google's price comparison service unfairly favored itself over smaller European competitors.
