Kraken Faces Record Law Enforcement Requests, Discloses 10,369 Accounts
Law enforcement and regulatory requests to the U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange Kraken increased by 38.6% over the past year, reaching 6,826 in total.
Requests came from 71 countries, with the United States leading the way, accounting for 1,951 requests (28.6% of all inquiries). The most active U.S. agency was the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), responsible for 614 requests (31% of all U.S. requests). In contrast, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), known for its strict stance on crypto, made just 37 requests.
According to Kraken’s official report, the exchange complied with 57% of law enforcement requests, disclosing information on 10,369 accounts. The majority of user data shared was from the United States (34.5%), followed by the United Kingdom (8.8%) and Germany (8.5%). This data highlights that a single request can involve information on multiple active accounts.
Many types of information requests are received, and Kraken has strict policies and procedures to comply with laws and regulations and protect client privacy while supplying data when we have a legal obligation to do so,
stated Kraken representatives.
These requests are handled by a specialized team, including lawyers, former prosecutors, analysts, and anti-money laundering experts. Kraken emphasized that they continuously strive to improve their cooperation with law enforcement agencies without compromising customer privacy.
The report followed Kraken’s announcement of $1.5 billion in annual revenue, a 128% increase compared to the previous year. This growth is likely driven by increased trading activity amid a rising cryptocurrency market, as well as Kraken’s expanded service offerings, including staking and institutional products.
