The economic case for artificial intelligence is staggering, built on projections that position it as a fundamental driver of global growth for decades to come. The scale of this anticipated transformation is difficult to overstate. Research from McKinsey estimates that generative AI alone has the potential to add the equivalent of $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion in value annually across 63 distinct use cases – a figure comparable to the entire 2021 GDP of the United Kingdom. In 2023, private investment in generative AI surged to $25.2 billion, nearly an eightfold increase from the previous year. Today, 99% of CEOs report that their companies are investing in AI, and 75% of knowledge workers are already using it in their day-to-day work.
Yet, a critical disconnect has emerged between this enthusiastic investment and its tangible results. This is the “generative AI paradox“:
- While nearly every company is deploying AI in some form, a striking 80% report no material impact on their earnings.
- The primary reason appears to be a strategic imbalance. Most companies focus on “horizontal” tools like general-purpose copilots, which are easy to deploy but deliver diffuse benefits.

Since AI makes nearly any piece of information instantly accessible and synthesizable, it dramatically reduces the incentive for our brains to store and consolidate knowledge internally. As researchers from Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon noted, while GenAI can streamline tasks like literature reviews, this outsourcing may harm our ability to learn and remember.
