Surf, Sun & Satoshis: Inside El Zonte, the Bitcoin Beach Town

sea, beach, palm trees and bitcoin - The Coinomist

El Zonte, a scenic coastal town in El Salvador, was once known as a surfer’s paradise. However, with Bitcoin now functioning as everyday currency, the town has earned a new identity as Bitcoin Beach.

What Makes El Zonte a Tourist Magnet?

With prices in this tropical paradise ranging from budget-friendly (renting a modest bungalow a few rows back from the beach) to luxury experiences (dining at the VIP restaurant of the Palo Verde hotel or a nighttime yacht cruise), El Zonte attracts both digital nomads and real millionaires. Most importantly, they can all pay using the digital gold, Bitcoin.

Moreover, both locals and tourists use satoshis (the smallest units of Bitcoin) to pay for food, accommodations, surfboard rentals, and even medical services. Many local businesses also accept stablecoins, especially USDT

So, how did this small beach town become a pioneer in the global crypto movement? And why is it seen as a symbol of a crypto-driven future that has already arrived?

How El Zonte Became Bitcoin Beach

Located in La Libertad on El Salvador’s Pacific coast, El Zonte has long been a hotspot for surfers. Dubbed a “surfer’s paradise,” the town is known for its consistent waves, ideal seabed contours, and laid-back vibe—a remote getaway untouched by the chaos of the outside world.

However, in 2019, this quiet town of just 3,000 residents entered a new chapter in its history, becoming the first place in El Salvador to integrate Bitcoin as a legal currency.

The Bitcoin Beach project started with a donation from an anonymous American benefactor, who sent around 40 BTC to a local nonprofit. Soon after, local residents Roman Martínez (known as Chimbera), Pete DeSoto, and Mike Peterson joined the initiative, co-founding a visionary project to transform El Zonte into a full-fledged crypto-powered beach resort on the Pacific coast.

El Zonte’s Crypto Economy

Over time, El Zonte built a thriving local economy where Lightning Network facilitates fast and seamless Bitcoin transactions. Shops, restaurants, and even surf schools began accepting BTC, creating a self-sustaining Bitcoin ecosystem.

By 2021, when El Salvador officially adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, El Zonte was already fully prepared. In fact, this small beach town inspired President Nayib Bukele to enact the historic law, making El Salvador the first country in the world to legalize cryptocurrency.

We're preparing our children for a digital future. They check their balances on their phones, get excited when prices rise, navigate crypto exchange interfaces, and know how to use ATMs. The financial education we never had is now available to our kids, opening up incredible opportunities in El Zonte,

says Roman Martínez.

What began as a private initiative by crypto enthusiasts has evolved into a full-scale project with major official partners and sponsors, including:

  • El Salvador’s Ministry of Tourism (Ministerio de Turismo)
  • Swedish crypto payment platform Bitrefill
  • Crypto services provider Cash App
  • Bitcoin ATM manufacturer Athena Bitcoin
  • Mining company Volcano Energy

Additionally, Bitcoin Beach has its own White Paper, outlining its development plans and the opportunities available to donors.

Living with Bitcoin in El Zonte: Opportunities and Challenges

Bitcoin has transformed financial access for many Salvadorans. Previously, a large portion of the population, especially in remote areas without banks, had limited or no access to financial services.

However, with smartphones and internet connectivity, Bitcoin has become a powerful tool for financial inclusion. According to Forbes, remittances (money sent from abroad) account for $5 billion annually in El Salvador. With cryptocurrencies, people can transfer money faster and at a lower cost.

For tourists, El Zonte is no longer just a surfing destination—it has become a cultural phenomenon. Travelers from the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Brazil visit not only to catch waves but also to experience a crypto-powered lifestyle firsthand.

Surf lessons paid in satoshis and souvenirs bought via QR codes have drawn both tech-savvy Gen Z travelers and experienced crypto investors. In 2023, the town saw significant infrastructure upgrades, including new roads, a modernized power substation, and an improved drainage system, further enhancing its appeal to visitors.

Challenges Facing Bitcoin Beach

However, not everything runs smoothly. BTC’s volatility poses a significant risk for locals who rely on it for daily transactions. When Bitcoin’s price drops, their savings lose value.

For instance, in 2022, a sharp market downturn caused widespread panic among El Zonte’s residents. The founders of Bitcoin Beach responded quickly by educating the community on diversification strategies and the use of stablecoins to protect their wealth. As a result, locals are now better prepared to weather future crypto market swings.

Another challenge is limited internet access in some areas, making transactions difficult. Despite these hurdles, the initiative continues to expand. Bitcoin Beach now plans to introduce its programs in other Salvadoran resorts, creating a nationwide network of Bitcoin-based economies.

El Zonte as a Blueprint for the World

El Zonte has proven to be a scalable model that can be replicated elsewhere. By 2024, other coastal towns in El Salvador (such as Punta Mango) began adopting similar initiatives, inspired by their neighbor’s success. This demonstrates how a local experiment can evolve into a nationwide movement, positioning El Salvador as a global leader in Bitcoin adoption.

For tourists and investors, El Zonte is more than just a beach paradise—it’s an economic phenomenon. With Bitcoin ATMs, decentralized payment apps, and blockchain education programs integrated into daily life, the town has drawn international media attention. Many describe it as a real-world glimpse into the future of digital finance.

That said, critics argue that relying too heavily on cryptocurrency carries inherent risks. A severe market crash could potentially disrupt the local economy. Still, El Zonte’s residents see Bitcoin as a lifeline for countries that have long been excluded from the global financial system.

Today, the Bitcoin Beach project continues to raise satoshi donations to expand its infrastructure, while locals hope their town will become a global model for Bitcoin adoption. In El Zonte, waves and blockchain are coming together to create a new future for El Salvador and for anyone ready to embrace a financial revolution.
