Bandai Namco, SEGA and Square Enix to launch blockchain games

Bandai Namco, SEGA and Square Enix to launch blockchain games

Major Japanese gaming companies Bandai Namco, SEGA and Square Enix are planning to release NFT-enabled Play-to-Earn blockchain games.

This was announced at the Tokyo Games Show event by Rio Matsubara, a representative of the ecological blockchain Oasyswas created specifically for game development. Game industry giants are intending to create NFT blockchain games despite the negative attitude of some gamers towards cryptocurrencies. According to Rio Matsubara, Bandai Namco, SEGA and Square Enix are Oasys partners, who have joined the project not for the sake of short-term informational noise, but for long-term development strategies based on blockchains.

“All the leaders of the gaming companies with which we cooperate understand that blockchain technology will be in demand in all industries in the future, and gaming is not an exception. Therefore, they act today in order to be able to influence the progress of the sphere tomorrow, ” the Oasys representative notes.

Japanese game makers are not going to transfer already finished products to the blockchain. According to Rio Matsubara, these will be brand new blockchain games from partner companies. The solution is due to the fact that it will take a lot of time to implement the Play-to-Earn model into existing game mechanics. It's also much more efficient to develop new games to fix flaws as they roll out, making the format more sustainable and successful, and then consider pushing P2E into existing projects.

The main Oasys blockchain network, powered by the Proof of Stake consensus mechanism, is due to launch at the end of 2022. According to Rio Matsubara, upcoming partners’ blockchain games will be announced in 2023.

While working on the release of new decentralized games, Oasys and partners would like to make their projects less dependent on the price of in-game NFT games. This is now a problem for many gamers, causing concern among their creators. As a result, the gameplay is relegated to the last place and games turn into another way of trading speculation, losing popularity after the drawdown in the value of their in-game assets. Therefore, the blockchain games of Bandai Namco, SEGA and Square Enix will be focused primarily on creating a full gaming experience.

Luc Sillay, the general manager of Blowfish Studios, a subsidiary of Animoca Brands, believes that more Play-to-Earn gamers would like to see more complex and sophisticated gameplay in this format, instead of a limited earning mechanism.

Such a popular game developer as Epic Games, creator of Fortnite, is also involved in introducing blockchain into its business model. In July, Tim Sweeney, the company’s CEO, revealed that they would definitely not follow the example of Minecraft, which banned the integration of non-fungible tokens into the gameplay. As proof of his words, a free NFT game called Blankos Block Party by Mythical Games was recently released in the Epic Games store.
