Fake Aave Ads on Google Search Fuel Phishing Scams

On June 20, 2025, Scam Sniffer flagged fake Aave ads in Google search that lead victims to phishing sites copying the Aave UI and draining funds.

Web3 security firm Scam Sniffer warned on June 20, 2025, that fake ads of decentralized finance platform Aave began appearing at the top of Google search results globally. These ads direct users to phishing sites that mimic the Aave interface and use deceptive branding and misleading domain names. Scammers aim to make users connect their wallets and give up control of their assets.

Attack Method and User Impact

Once a wallet is connected to the fake sites, they prompt approvals that silently transfer assets. The phishing sites replicate Aave's look and feel, making detection difficult without technical scrutiny.

Attackers exploit users' trust in high-ranking search results to trick them into connecting wallets and authorizing harmful transactions. The campaign targets users searching for legitimate Aave access.

Previous Similar Campaigns

Similar phishing campaigns in 2024 targeted other DeFi protocols, including fake airdrop schemes that impersonated well-known projects. Another campaign used sponsored ads on app stores to compromise MetaMask users.

A recent exposure of billions of login credentials (including Facebook, Google, Telegram, and GitHub) may enable attackers to conduct credential-stuffing and targeted phishing. Security experts recommend users avoid relying on search results for platform access and instead use verified URLs or bookmarks.

Phishing attacks increasingly exploit online advertising channels to reach users, with sponsored ad placements lending legitimacy to fraudulent links.
