Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025: $1M for the Best Web3 Solutions to Africa’s Real-World Problems

Hedera invites developers to join the Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025 — a major Web3 competition offering $1 million in prizes for the most effective dApps built on Hedera that help solve real challenges across Africa.
The Hashgraph Association and the Exponential Science Foundation have jointly announced the Hedera Africa 2025 Hackathon — a large-scale Web3 competition with a $1 million prize pool to be distributed among the winning teams.
Eligible participants will form teams of 2–5 developers and create decentralized applications (dApps) on the Hedera blockchain, targeting real-world problems across Africa.
- The Hedera Africa Hackathon kicks off August 1 and will run until September 30, 2025.
- Participants can work remotely or attend on-site sessions in 20 African cities, including key tech centers like Lagos, Cairo, and Nairobi.
- The event is expected to attract more than 10,000 developers from at least 15 countries.
The Hedera Africa Hackathon is designed with purpose: to source real-world blockchain solutions that support Africa’s economic and social advancement.
From financial access to environmental accountability, four main tracks have been defined — and developers are invited to compete across all of them:
- Finance & RWA Tokenization — enabling blockchain-based credit, insurance, and asset control.
- ESG & Traceability — creating tools to track emissions, sustainability efforts, and supply chains.
- Digital Identity & AI — building systems for private, verifiable identity, enhanced by AI.
- Gaming, Metaverse & NFTs — unlocking the power of immersive entertainment and digital creativity.
One of the key features of the Hedera Africa Hackathon is accessibility. All participants will receive direct support from certified Hedera engineers and can use the learning tools provided by Hedera Academy. This structure allows even developers without blockchain experience to confidently compete for funding.

As Kamal Youssefi, President of The Hashgraph Association, noted:
Africa’s technological ecosystems are developing at an unprecedented pace — and this hackathon will provide Web3 builders with the knowledge and infrastructure to make lasting local impact even faster.
Paolo Tasca, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Exponential Science Foundation, stated:
We encourage anyone with an interest in blockchain technology to sign up and start developing the next wave of practical solutions across multiple industries to gain valuable experience and a chance to claim the prize pool. Our hope is that participants will go on to launch their own ventures and share their learnings.
The hackathon has received support from over fifty partners worldwide, spanning universities, research institutions, and regional tech centers. For winners, the benefits extend beyond the $1 million prize pool — including entry to accelerators, personalized mentorship, and opportunities for deeper investment.
More than a competition, the Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025 aims to surface untapped talent and lay the groundwork for sustainable, startup-led innovation across Africa.
