As the world continues to fight for equality, Solana’s ad campaign became the focus of heated debate. Featured at the Solana Accelerate conference, the ad depicts a therapy session where a man reflects on his intrusive thoughts about the latest crypto industry developments.
The moment that raised eyebrows was when the therapist suggested inventing a “new gender” and focusing on pronouns. With a backdrop of patriotic music, the man declared that his passion lies in creating technology, not new gender identities.
The release of the video triggered an immediate backlash from the community. With a runtime of over two and a half minutes, the video quickly surpassed one million views, showing just how easily a marketing campaign can go wrong. Users on social media, including key figures from the crypto community and LGBT rights supporters, denounced the ad, calling it “Cringe” and “Tone-deaf.” The video had over 1,300 comments before it was taken down.

The ad has been criticized for ignoring serious social issues and transforming gender identity into a punchline for the sake of a provocative marketing campaign. Even those who initially supported the idea have backed away from it. The combination of patriotism, innovation, and sensitive cultural topics didn’t resonate as intended and could damage the brand’s reputation in the long run.
Industry Leaders React
Adam Kochran, a venture cryptocurrency investor, pointed out that it took Solana nine hours to acknowledge their mistake and remove the controversial video. He emphasized that many legendary hackers and developers from minority communities overcame societal limitations and played vital roles in shaping technology because their skills and personalities were recognized over bias.
They approved this, supported it and celebrated it. They rolled it back because it hurt their business, not because they thought it was wrong. This is who they chose to be. They showed you exactly who they are,
he added, commenting on the ad’s removal.
Sean O’Connor, the COO of Blocknative, didn’t hold back, calling the ad “stupid as hell.” He stressed that while minorities already endure enough hardships, Solana’s ad made them even more vulnerable. O’Connor also mentioned how certain state laws limit the rights of these groups.
Marketing professionals agree that dealing with political and social issues in ads is always risky. A crypto industry figure pointed out that the ad could have been a bold challenge to established thinking, but instead, it turned into a complete failure, with backlash from all sides.

The public’s response to marketing errors is sharper than ever. Although Solana and the project’s foundation have remained tight-lipped about the situation, the removal of the ad speaks volumes—indicating the project had to retreat in order to quiet the swelling tide of criticism.
