The new Conservative leader wants to make Canada a blockchain hub

On September 10, Canada held elections for the new head of the Conservative Party. He became Pierre Poilievre, known for his loyal attitude to cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin (BTC).

The new leader of the Canadian Conservatives is one of the long-time members of Parliament, an ardent supporter of Bitcoin, Pierre Poilievre. The high-profile politician received over 68% of the vote, making him the unquestionable winner in the first round of voting.

Poilievre won not only in the overall calculation but also gained an advantage in almost all constituencies. His main rival, former Prime Minister of Quebec, Jean Charest, received only 16% of the vote. The results of the other three electoral contestants were even less consoling.

Pierre Poilievre is a potential candidate for Prime Minister of Canada. The Conservative Party, together with him, plans to make another attempt to defeat the Liberals, led by the current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Delivering a speech after the election results were announced, the new Conservative leader said, “Tonight begins the journey to replace an old government that costs you more and delivers you less with a new government that puts you first – your paycheck, your retirement, your home, your country.”

Poilievre and the Bank of Canada

Pierre Poilievre began his political career at 25, becoming a Conservative member of the Canadian House of Commons and representing the western district of Ottawa. He is known for his harsh criticism of Justin Trudeau and the head of the central bank, as well as for his active promotion of bitcoin.

During the campaign, the politician repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the activities of the prime minister and the regulator aimed at taming inflation. Thus, Poilievre called the central bank and its leadership incompetent government puppets in his social networks. Moreover, the conservative made one of the key points of his program, the firing of Governor Tiff Macklem, followed by an audit and a halt to developing their own digital currency.

“The Bank of Canada has zero business developing its own digital currency. As PM, I would scrap that and instead allow the Auditor General to audit their $400 billion money-printing fiasco.”

Poilievre and cryptocurrencies

Pierre Poilievre cannot be called a supporter of fiat currencies. Back in the spring, he said about the lack of financial freedom of the country’s residents: “Government is ruining the Canadian dollar, so Canadians should have the freedom to use other money, such as bitcoin.”

According to the politician, BTC will help to cope with inflation, which is breaking thirty-year records. Poilievre included in his election program the legitimacy of cryptocurrencies and the creation of a clear regulatory framework for blockchain companies and investors in every province.

Demonstrating his commitment to BTC, he even bought shawarma at Tahini’s London and paid for it with crypto. Images from this photo shoot instantly went viral on social media, and Poilievre once again called on the government to give people back control over their money and legalize cryptocurrency.
