Armani Ferrante: From Losing $14.5M to Creating xNFT and Backpack

Armani Ferrante: From Losing $14.5M to Creating xNFT and Backpack

For some, even minor obstacles can block the path to success. However, for Armani Ferrante—a legendary blockchain developer—even a $14.5 million loss couldn’t stop him from launching the xNFT project Mad Lads and the crypto wallet Backpack.

Armani Ferrante, also known as “Mad Armani,” is a software engineer with a background at Apple and in crypto projects like Alameda Research and Coral. The future CEO of Backpack began his crypto journey back in 2017 and has since solidified his reputation within the community as a prominent Solana enthusiast and developer of projects aimed at widespread crypto adoption.

Blockchain Development Journey

Ferrante's fascination with development began in childhood, fueled by a passion for video games and coding. This interest led him to pursue computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also developed a keen interest in mathematics, attracted by its theoretical nature and foundational importance across various fields.

Post-graduation, Ferrante landed a position at Apple. Though he found the company exceptional, he felt stifled by its bureaucratic and secretive environment, which he believed hindered young engineers' growth. Additionally, the skills he acquired were so specific to Apple that they were not easily transferable to other roles, prompting him to leave and focus fully on the burgeoning crypto industry.

By 2017, Ferrante was deeply immersed in the Ethereum ecosystem, dedicating his spare time to exploring and understanding the blockchain. His efforts didn't go unnoticed, as his open-source contributions caught the attention of Alameda Research, leading to a fruitful tenure there.

Working at Alameda Research, Launching Coral

Alameda Research, once a towering name in the cryptocurrency fund arena and now bankrupt, became the new professional base for Armani Ferrante. He was instrumental in developing diverse solutions and exploring new technological possibilities within the firm. Notably, Ferrante was one of the early advocates for the potential of the Solana blockchain, urging Alameda Research's leadership to engage with it.

Ferrante is the founder of Coral, a company dedicated to crafting solutions for Solana. Its main product, Anchor, has emerged as the preferred framework for developers working with Solana.

Backpack

Ferrante recognized that the primary barrier to understanding the significance of NFTs and other cryptocurrency assets was the complexity of their use. The existing solutions—wallets, DEX exchanges, NFT marketplaces, etc.—were fragmented, necessitating users to navigate through many unnecessary steps.

Therefore, Ferrante extended his vision beyond Anchor to create Backpack—a platform aimed at fostering widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies. He envisioned Backpack as a comprehensive tool encompassing all essential cryptocurrency interactions: a crypto wallet, an asset exchange platform, and NFT storage capabilities.

Anything that you want to do in crypto, quite literally, can be done inside of Backpack,

said Armani Ferrante.

In September 2022, Coral under Ferrante's leadership held a strategic funding round that successfully raised $20 million from entities like Jump Crypto and FTX Ventures.

Approximately six weeks later, the collapse of FTX unfolded, affecting all associated companies, including Coral, which was financially backed by FTX Ventures.

Ferrante’s estimated losses due to the FTX bankruptcy totaled $14.5 million, prompting a shift to a “cockroach mode”—a strategy of stringent cost control and incremental development. Despite these challenges, Ferrante managed to keep Backpack viable, and by February 2024, the project was valued at $120 million.

Armani Ferrante's Impact on the Community

Like Giorgio Armani's influence on the fashion industry, Armani Ferrante has significantly impacted the crypto industry. Despite challenges like funding issues, critical backlash, and the general downturn in community morale, he persisted with his innovative projects.

Each of Ferrante’s projects has uniquely impacted the industry:

  1. Anchor: Developed by Ferrante’s company, Coral, this remains the most popular framework for creating solutions on the Solana blockchain.
  2. Mad Lads: This first xNFT collection revolutionized the NFT landscape, transforming these assets from mere cultural tokens to functional applications.
  3. Backpack: This platform has simplified how users interact with cryptocurrencies and provided a source of revenue during the bear market through a significant airdrop.

Ferrante is a regular at crypto conferences, scheduled to speak at EDCON, WebX, and KBW2024. He also actively shares insights and interacts with the community on X, particularly with followers of Mad Lads and Backpack.
