1. Ripple Won Over the US SEC: Alderoty Hinted at Cross-Appeal
Ripple’s Chief Legal Officer, Stuart Alderoty, was one of the key figures in the US SEC vs. Ripple lawsuit that began in December 2020.
The case was crucial because it was determining whether Ripple’s XRP token should be classified as a security. Had Ripple lost, it could have had a massive impact on the entire industry and other crypto projects too.
On March 19, the SEC dropped the case, stepping back from its claims that Ripple’s sale of $1.3 billion in XRP tokens violated securities laws.
Throughout the case, Alderoty described it as an example of government overreach. Reflecting on the outcome, he said, “This landmark case sets a precedent for the domestic crypto industry.”
Alderoty also pointed out that while Ripple is now in control and may consider a cross-appeal, it’s time to celebrate. A cross-appeal means Ripple plans to challenge parts of the decision they disagree with, even though they won the primary issue.
So, while they’re celebrating their victory, they might still ask the court to review certain aspects of the ruling.
2. Anatoly Yakovenko Joined Critics of a Solana Ad
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko criticized the controversial ad the team released this week, which was removed after receiving negative feedback from the community.
Reflecting on the video, Yakovenko called it “bad,” and “mean,” and said it was “punching down on a marginalized group.”
He added that he would ensure Solana stays out of culture wars and focuses on decentralization and open-source software development.
The criticism stemmed from a scene in the video where a man discusses technological growth in America with a therapist who also touches on gender identity – a sensitive topic that raised concerns.
In the ad, the therapist suggests the man focus on pronouns and genders, to which he responds that he wants to invent technologies.
3. WatcherGuru Says It Got Hacked But JackTheRippler Is Sceptical
On March 21, WatcherGuru, a popular crypto news provider, claimed their account was hacked. They noticed something was wrong when an unauthorized post appeared, suggesting a partnership between SWIFT and Ripple.
WatcherGuru said they removed the posts after regaining control of the account. They also noted that the hackers had blocked Ripple and CEO Brad Garlinghouse, likely to slow the spread of the false report.
However, many users were skeptical about the hack. XRP trader Cobb (@Cobb_XRPL) questioned, “Why are you trying to explain so hard?” Meanwhile, @vincent_vancode suggested the situation didn’t seem like a real hack.
Ripple community member JackTheRippler shared a separate post, pointing out that the same news appeared on WatcherGuru’s Facebook and Telegram accounts, not just on X (formerly Twitter).
JackTheRippler commented, “They deleted the posts after just a few seconds—sounds like the fastest account recovery in history.” He added that while the news might be true, it’s likely they received an immediate call to remove it.
4. Merlin The Trader Looks Ahead to US SEC’s Crypto Roundtable
“Mark your calendars,” says crypto trader Merlin The Trader (@MerlijnTrader) in a post on X, referring to the SEC's first-ever Crypto Regulation Roundtable.
The event is scheduled for 1 PM ET on March 21, 2025, and could reshape the regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
It’s part of the SEC's Crypto Task Force, led by Commissioner Hester Peirce, aiming to define the status of crypto assets and how the sector ties into the broader U.S. economy.
5. A Moment Captured: Matt Huang Shared Photo With Vitalik Buterin
Based on images shared by Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang, discussions took place within the Ethereum community this week. Recently, he posted an image with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, captioning it “Make capitalism great again.”
This was a reference to Buterin’s earlier post “make communism great again” which was cut out of context and raised discussions.
On March 20, Huang also shared a photo with Danny Ryan, Ansgar Dietrichs, Brian Armstrong, and others gathered around a table.
