Cassette Culture 3.0: The NFT Revival of Audio Tapes

While cassettes and vinyls scream retro, today’s audience desires a fresh spin. Enter Cassette Culture 3.0, turning artist tracks into NFTs!

On this page

Big names like Snoop Dogg or Justin Bieber never struggle with reaching an audience or monetizing their craft. But what about the rising stars of the underground scene? If they sidestep the viral route of platforms like TikTok and opt for more traditional methods, they often rely heavily on live gigs to earn. Concerts are a fantastic way to connect with fans, earning their loyalty and crafting a reputation. Yet, the COVID-19 pandemic brought live performances to a near halt, snatching away this revenue stream.

Vault Music offers a novel solution. Built on the Solana blockchain, they introduced the Cassette Culture 3.0 initiative, encouraging indie artists to release their live recordings in the form of NFTs.

Vault Music is presently collaborating with artists from New York. However, they have ambitions to broaden their horizon, looking to launch Cassette Culture 3.0 in various US and European cities, specifically targeting musical hotspots like London and Amsterdam.

Vinyl: High upfront production costs, requires supply chain, ~30% profit margins for artists, no royalties upon fan resale, not eco-friendly
Vault Music: Zero upfront production costs, no supply chain, profit margins are flipped, royalties upon resale, carbon-neutral
Both: Great collectible formats, easy for fans to buy, limited-edition, giftable/tradable, contains cover art.

This is how Vault Music describes the advantages of their NFT live performances.

So, how does one listen to these NFT cassettes?

Cassette Culture 3.0 captures live performances of budding underground artists. Vault Music is at the helm, ensuring crisp sound quality and adding multimedia extras like behind-the-scenes photos and video clips. These digital showcases are limited in number, usually between 100-150 copies, and prices start at just $4.99.

For those keen on acquiring these NFTs, the Vault Music platform is the place to go. Currently, they feature artists such as Sid Simons, Alertski, Wilmah, Charlotte Rose Benjamin, Richie Quake, and D'Lourdes. And there's more on the horizon with upcoming releases from acts like Telescreens, Tor Miller, Savoia, Middle Part, and other rising stars.

Vault Music is all about transparency. Each listing provides potential buyers with:

  • A detailed description (e.g., “An exclusive live performance of D'Lourdes at NYC's Bowery's Electric on June 16th, 2023”);
  • The total editions up for grabs;
  • The price point;
  • A full tracklist;
  • A glimpse of bonus content, such as photos and videos;
  • Current sales figures.
