In his fresh LinkedIn post, Arthur Mensch, the co-founder and CEO Mistral AI, informed that the company has hit an important milestone.
“Together with Guillaume Lample and Timothee Lacroix , we are announcing today a major milestone for the project we have been crafting over the past two months to create a new European player with a global vocation in generative artificial intelligence,” he wrote.
A former research scientist at Google DeepMind, Mensch is joined by two other co-founders Timothee Lacroix and Guillaume Lample. They used to work at Facebook AI as a research engineer and research scientist, respectively.
The startup was founded in May 2023.
According to Mensch, top tier international investors believe in the project and hence they got access to 105 million euros in seed funding. This money will be spent “on resources and networks that are necessary to start ruling out a new model of generative artificial intelligence, combining scientific excellence, an open-source approach and a socially responsible vision of technology.”
The CEO also says that professional experiences of the team members that they acquired after working in leading tech companies have led them to believe that they have the skills to create an alternative and innovative project.
“We are proud to initiate this global project from France, our home country, and to contribute, at our level, to the emergence of a credible new player in generative artificial intelligence from Europe. Over the coming months, we will be focusing all our energy and passion on honoring the trust placed in us by our investors,” he concluded.
Currently, the startup looks to attract more talents.
Mensch also recently interacted with the French President Emmanuel Macron about EU-level regulation of AI, with the latter stating, among other things, that premature regulation would stifle innovation.
