A French court has exonerated two brothers of criminal charges related to the $8.5 million Platypus Finance hack in February 2023.
The
accused were apprehended within a week of the breach with assistance
from crypto researcher ZachXBT and Binance. The brothers had claimed
they planned to return the stolen assets for a 10% reward.
The
court ruled that accessing a public smart contract does not constitute
unauthorized computer access or fraud. Although criminal charges have
been dropped, the court noted that Platypus Finance retains the option
to pursue a civil lawsuit.
