CoinGecko has unveiled a ranking of the 50 largest airdrops by cryptocurrency companies, gauged by the peak historical prices of the tokens distributed. Uniswap leads the pack with its airdrops valuing a staggering $6.43 billion, closely followed by Apecoin with $3.54 billion in distributions.
The year 2021 dominated this arena, witnessing the bulk of these airdrops, with 18 out of the 50. This contrasts sharply with 2020, which saw just five significant airdrops. The numbers slightly dwindled in subsequent years, with 13-14 major distributions, a trend possibly linked to the emerging bear market and various crises shaking the industry.
Year-wise, the airdrops making waves were Uniswap in 2020 with $6.43 billion, dYdX in 2021 with $2.01 billion, Apecoin in 2022 with $3.54 billion, and Arbitrum in 2023 with $1.96 billion. The year 2023 saw 13 projects making it to the list, cumulatively worth $4.56 billion, with only Arbitrum and Celestia (valued at $728 million) breaking into the top 10.
