U.S. authorities have arrested former Google engineer Linwei Ding on suspicion of stealing confidential data related to artificial intelligence development. Over a few years, he is alleged to have conducted four significant data heists, absconding with at least 500 varied and detailed documents.
Utilizing a Google cloud account to elude the company's primary security defenses, Ding later told security services he used the stolen data to document his contributions. Moreover, he's accused of engaging with Chinese tech firms and launching a fraudulent startup.
We are grateful to the FBI for helping protect our information and will continue cooperating with them closely
stated Google's senior employee, José Castañeda.
Following the theft of the latest documents, Ding resigned, citing fictitious reasons, and even bought a flight ticket to China. Nevertheless, he opted to stay in California for a while longer, leading to his arrest. Ding could face up to a decade behind bars and up to $250,000 in fines per charge if found guilty.
