The police in Hong Kong uncovered a large crypto scam and arrested 27 suspects – 21 men and 6 women.
According to local media HK01, the group defrauded multiple victims in romance scams both from Hong Kong and other countries, and got HK$360 million (around $46,3) from them.
The report mentions that the suspects are relatively young, with the mastermind being a 29-year-old member of the Sun Yee On triad.

The group operated for around a year with participants being promised to receive 40% of commissions.
Police started their investigation in August 2024 under the special operation “Secret Word.” On October 9, they started the operation “Secret Message” and mobilized 100 detectives for the case.
Detectives found out that the syndicate was divided into different teams for scamming operations. They seized 41 computers and servers, 137 mobile phones, and other equipment from the syndicate's nearly 4,000-square-foot operation center located in an industrial building in Hung Hom.

In the office of a 24-year-old “team leader” Chan, the police also found 15 metal rods and 4 hammers, classified as offensive weapons. The team leader was additionally arrested for “possession of offensive weapons.
The suspected proceeds of crime include over HK$200,000 ($25,742) in cash and luxury watches, including a red Richard Mille, valued at HK$2 million ($257,400), and a gold Rolex, worth around HK$300,000 ($38,600).
