As reported by The Verge, OpenAI plans to release a new AI model named Orion by early December 2024. In the coming weeks, the model is expected to be hosted on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, OpenAI’s primary partner and investor.
However, this time, users won’t be able to test the model directly via the ChatGPT interface. Initially, OpenAI will grant exclusive access only to partner companies developing products and features based on its technology. It’s still unclear how long this early access phase will last.
Orion is expected to be publicly known as GPT-5, though no official confirmation has been provided. Previously, OpenAI representatives suggested that the upcoming model could be 100 times more powerful than GPT-4. The long-term goal is to merge these models into a unified AI, known as AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at Orion’s imminent release back in September 2024, posting a message that mentioned stars—a nod to Orion, one of the brightest and most recognizable constellations, the legendary hunter from Greek mythology.

News of the upcoming model follows OpenAI’s recent successful funding round, which raised approximately $6.6 billion at a valuation of $157 billion. Investors are hopeful the company will soon shift its focus toward expanding its commercial endeavors.
