A Chinese government official with significant cryptocurrency investments was recruited by foreign spies and sold state secrets to cover his crypto-related losses. Wang Moumou received over 1 million yuan for his activities but was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment for espionage.
According to China’s Ministry of State Security, Wang Moumou was a government employee in a classified department. After incurring heavy losses in cryptocurrency trading, he was pressured into cooperating with foreign spies.
Wang provided highly classified and confidential national security information in exchange for payments in cryptocurrency.
The People’s Court of China sentenced Wang Moumou to life imprisonment for espionage and permanently stripped him of his political rights.
Wang’s ability to access and transfer sensitive information was made possible by weaknesses in confidentiality management and security measures within his department. China’s Ministry of State Security, in coordination with other agencies, has conducted an inspection of Wang's workplace and set a deadline for implementing corrective measures.
According to the Chinese government, Wang initially intended to cut ties with foreign intelligence agencies but was forced to continue under sustained pressure, threats, and demands, leading him to steal and disclose classified information.
