A 23-year-old Ukrainian man was robbed of 8 M baht (about $222,000) in Phuket, Thailand on Friday, Bangkok Post reports.
The victim Viacheslav Leibov told the police he visited a friend’s room where he was forced to transfer cryptocurrency to a group of armed men.
In an update, Bangkok Post says four people were arrested at the hotel Khok Kloi of Takua Thung district in neighboring Phang Nga province.
The suspects are Alfred Chernyshuk, 18, a Ukrainian, Arman Grigoryan, 21, an Armenian, Ruslan Musaiev, 22, a Ukrainian, and Mraz Atoian, 21, a Russian. As a result of questioning the police found out that one of the suspects had known Viacheslav Leibov for a long time and learnt that he had a large amount of crypto assets.
The suspects told the police they intended to hire a driver to go to Malaysia but were dropped off at the hotel in Phang Nga instead as the driver refused to take them. Hoping to avoid the police, they paid for 4 VIP rooms but stayed in two.
The 4 suspects were held in custody and charged with armed robbery, and illegal confinement of another person.
Earlier, the victim told the police that he was tied with ropes and cable ties in the hotel room where masked people threatened him to transfer cryptocurrencies. Arman Grigoryan held a hummer and a man with a covered face held a knife.
They said if the victim didn’t make a transfer, they’d break his legs. After the robbery, the gang left, telling Leibov to not report the crime.
After they left the room, the victim freed himself and learnt from the reception that the room was rented by Arman Grigoryan and Alfred Chernyshuk.
