StarkWare has officially introduced Appchains on Starknet, a Layer-2 Ethereum blockchain equipped with zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptography. The company claims its new “SN Stack” will make it easier for developers to create blockchains specifically designed for unique cryptocurrency use cases.
The foundation for this innovation was laid in July 2023, when StarkWare announced plans for a customizable developer stack aimed at enabling the creation of custom blockchains.
This announcement mirrors recent initiatives by competitors, who have also launched Layer-2 solutions to scale Ethereum, delivering faster and cheaper transactions via sidechains.
Founded in 2018, StarkWare emerged as one of the earliest players in the Layer-2 scaling space. Its defining characteristic is its use of Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP), a sophisticated cryptographic approach that keeps the majority of transmitted data private.

Unlike optimistic rollups used by most Ethereum scaling solutions, ZK-based networks like StarkWare are widely regarded as offering greater security and technological sophistication.
Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) technology has been adopted by multiple platforms beyond StarkWare, including zkSync, Scroll, Linea, Taiko, and more.

The SN Stack provides developers with flexible solutions. Options include Madara, an open-source modular system offering adaptability; Dojo, tailored for gaming and blockchain applications; and StarkWare Sequencer, a powerful infrastructure supporting Starknet’s public network.
Starknet revealed that their appchain stack consists of core elements, including Starknet OS for handling blockchain operations, CairoVM for running smart contracts, Blockifier for generating blocks, and cryptographic devices for proof creation and verification.
The development of the SN Stack’s current implementation was carried out in partnership with Paradex, a prominent app development firm.
