Three authors (Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson) filed a lawsuit against the AI company Anthropic. They accuse it of illegally using their literary works, along with those of many other authors, to train its AI-powered chatbot Claude.
The plaintiffs allege that Anthropic did not purchase the books or articles in question or obtain the necessary permissions but instead used pirated copies. According to the authors, although Anthropic positions itself as a public benefit company, it undermines the work of creative individuals.
“It is no exaggeration to say that Anthropic’s model seeks to profit from strip-mining the human expression and ingenuity behind each one of those works,
the complaint states.
The writers are seeking unspecified damages and a permanent injunction to prevent the illegal use of copyrighted works for training AI. This lawsuit is one of many filed against AI developers, including OpenAI and Meta Platforms, accusing them of copyright infringement.
