Hackers continue to actively target X accounts belonging to crypto founders and companies.
Recently, Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu’s (@ysiu) account was compromised by hackers, who promoted a fake memecoin called Animoca Brands (MOCA) along with the Mocaverse non-fungible token (NFT) collection.
On December 26, Animoca Brands confirmed the hack, saying there is no official token or NFT collection launched by the company.
Meanwhile, the MOCA token released on Solana-based launchpad Pump.fun had over $63,000 24-hour trading volume, according to data aggregator Birdeye.
Research by blockchain investigator ZachXBT links Siu’s account hack with a chain of phishing emails hackers use to compromise X accounts and promote fake tokens.
According to him, the address that deployed MOCA previously deployed other scammy tokens, generating a net of $500,000 in November 2024 by compromising more than 15 X accounts, including those of the streaming platform Kick, Brett memecoin, and Tools for Humanity co-founder Alex Blania.
ZachXBT says that, most probably, the scripts of these phishing emails included fake copyright infringement and created a sense of urgency. The investigator noted the need for 2FA security keys and limited address reuse between services.
According to recent updates, Yat Siu’s account is still controlled by hackers featuring posts about the fake token.
