Jian Wen, a British citizen of Chinese descent, faces charges from the UK Prosecution Service for her role in laundering over $6,1 billion, funds embezzled by the criminal Yadi Zhang. Zhang has deceived over 128,000 Chinese investors since 2014, promising investment returns before disappearing and converting the proceeds to Bitcoin.
Three years into her criminal activities, Zhang, under a new identity, moved to the UK and developed a friendship with Jian Wen, a waitress in a Chinese restaurant. Wen then became instrumental in converting Zhang's Bitcoin into jewels, properties, and liquid cash.
Prosecutors assert that Wen insists on her innocence, maintaining she was merely a carer for a businesswoman who made her wealth through legitimate channels including jewelry sales, real estate, and Bitcoin mining. Wen's sentencing is due before early March, while Zhang has managed to escape from the country.
