U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris hired two new advisors linked to the cryptocurrency industry: David Plouffe and Brian Nelson. However, their approaches and views on digital assets, as well as their previous work experiences, differ significantly.
Plouffe has been a member of the Binance Global Advisory Board since 2022, addressing regulatory and social issues. Later, he served as a strategic advisor at the payment company Alchemy Pay. He advocates for transparent and open regulation.
On the government side, there has to be a sense of, okay, let’s not fit this new thing into old rules,
Plouffe has previously stated.
Nelson, the former U.S. Treasury's Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, supports a stricter approach. He was involved in imposing a $4.3 billion fine on Binance and has worked with prominent digital asset critic, Senator Elizabeth Warren.
However, some in the cryptocurrency industry believe Nelson is open to dialogue. For example, they point to his criticism in May 2024, while still at the Treasury, of a potential ban on cryptocurrency mixing.
Additionally, he refuted Warren’s claim about the significant role of digital assets in financing Hamas, which is recognized as a terrorist organization in the U.S. He believes that the success of the crypto industry depends on the development of appropriate legislation, including tailored approaches.
