Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has acquired 619.7 BTC (worth $60 million) in its largest single Bitcoin purchase to date—four times the size of its previous acquisition of 159.7 BTC. This investment comes in the wake of Bitcoin’s recent price drop below the $100,000 mark.
Thanks to this investment, Metaplanet's total Bitcoin holdings have increased to 1762 BTC ($168 million), propelling the company to 12th place globally among public companies in Bitcoin ownership after less than a year of active investment. The company’s average purchase price for Bitcoin stands at approximately $75,000.
Management reported an impressive 310% return on Bitcoin investments over the past three months, starting in October 2024. This success was likely fueled by credit funds raised through the issuance of special bonds, a strategy similar to that of U.S.-based MicroStrategy.
Looking ahead, Metaplanet plans to position Bitcoin as one of its key investment pillars. Notably, the company’s stock price has surged by more than 2400% since the beginning of the year, hitting an all-time high of 4080 Japanese yen ($26) on December 17, 2024.
