The statement warns about North Korean cyber actors, including the Lazarus Group, targeting and compromising entities across the globe.
According to the three governments, DPRK’s cyber program threatens not only them but the broader international community, presenting a significant risk to the integrity and stability of the international financial system.
The trilateral alliance highlights North Korea's use of stolen digital assets to fund its weapons programs and underscores the need for enhanced international cooperation to counter these activities.
The statement mentioned large losses caused by North Korean hackers, including the $308 million crypto theft from the Japan-based company DMM Bitcoin, $50 million theft from Upbit, and $16 million theft from Rain Management. Notably, 2024’s biggest hacks included WazirX’s $235 million and Radiant Capital’s $50 million breaches.
The statement added that North Korea’s activities also involve exploiting freelance work platforms to place IT workers in companies, enabling insider threats to further its cyber objectives.
Private sector entities, especially those in the blockchain and freelance work industries, are encouraged by the countries to carefully review advisories and announcements on online networks. This will help improve cyber threat defenses and avoid the risk of unknowingly hiring DPRK IT workers, they mentioned.
