AI Tool Aids Doctors in Battling Brain Tumors
A new artificial intelligence (AI) tool called Cryosection Histopathology Assessment and Review Machine (Charm) is aiding doctors in the fight against aggressive brain tumors by identifying crucial characteristics that provide guidance during surgery.

Charm efficiently analyzes images to identify the genetic profile of gliomas, a type of aggressive brain tumor, which typically takes days or weeks using traditional methods. This advanced tool allows surgeons to rely on detailed diagnoses to guide their operations.
While Charm’s accuracy may not match that of current genetic tests, it provides swift predictions of a tumor’s profile. The rapid analysis provided by Charm allows doctors to proceed with the necessary treatment without requiring additional surgeries, resulting in valuable time savings.
Moreover, Charm has the ability to differentiate between malignant and benign tumor cells and determine the tumor’s grade, indicating its level of aggressiveness. These are assessments typically made by human pathologists during surgery. However, according to Kun-Hsing Yu, the senior author of the report, Charm could eliminate the need for a 10-to-15-minute wait or the presence of a pathologist on standby during the operation.
