Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. The suit, filed in California in February 2024, was retracted just one day before a scheduled court hearing on a dismissal motion filed by the defendants.
In his lawsuit, Musk accused OpenAI of violating agreements to develop artificial intelligence openly and transparently, alleging that the company was prioritizing profit over human betterment. Many legal experts initially deemed these accusations baseless, citing a lack of solid legal foundation.
Musk withdrew the lawsuit without prior notice, and neither party has commented on the matter. This development followed Musk’s criticism of Apple the previous day, for its collaboration with OpenAI on new AI features, which he claimed could compromise the privacy of iPhone users.
Additionally, Musk is the founder of xAI, an AI company that stands as a direct competitor to OpenAI. xAI recently attracted $6 billion in funding from notable investors including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and others.
