Thierry Breton, the commissioner responsible for the EU’s internal market, highlighted the intention to invest in new technologies, promote their adoption and expansion, and equip individuals with the necessary tools and skills to safely navigate virtual worlds.
According to the EC, web4 represents the convergence of various cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain, virtual worlds, and augmented reality. It envisions web4 as the next generation of the internet, surpassing the ongoing development of web3. The goal is to enable seamless integration between digital and physical objects and environments, facilitating enhanced interactions between humans and machines.
In addition to this program, the EU has unveiled two notable web4 public authority initiatives. The first is CitiVerse, an immersive urban environment designed for city planning and management purposes. The second is the European Virtual Human Twin, which serves as a model for clinical decision-making and personalized treatment.
