Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced that the company will now release new AI chip versions annually. This shift in strategy follows reports that the next-generation Blackwell chips have been delayed until late 2024 due to design shortcomings.
Nvidia views the faster development cycle as a means to solidify its market leadership in the fast-expanding AI sector and to ease investor concerns over the company’s slowing momentum. Huang also highlighted the indispensable role of generative AI in their production processes.
We can’t design without generative AI. We couldn’t design Blackwell, we can’t write our software without AI any more
Huang said.
Nonetheless, some analysts remain skeptical about Nvidia's approach. Matthew Ramsay of TD Cowen, for example, warns that the company is already facing serious issues related to product design and supply chain pressures, and he expects these problems to intensify.
