Quantum Technology Transform Digital Payments
Researchers from the University of Vienna’s Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology have unveiled a quantum-secured digital payment system. Utilizing pairs of quantum entangled photons, this innovation encrypts payment transactions in a way that makes them virtually impervious to tampering.

Quantum entanglement ensures that a change in one photon's state is mirrored by the other, regardless of the distance between them. The team encoded transaction data on entangled photons and transmitted them through fiber optic cables, executing a digital payment across different locations.
A crucial aspect of this technology is that if an unauthorized entity attempts to alter the transaction data, the photons' quantum state collapses, and the system instantaneously generates a new, secure cryptogram.
While promising, the current iteration of this technology requires an extensive period to process transactions. The researchers believe that utilizing higher-intensity photons could significantly accelerate transaction times, marking a stride toward revolutionizing digital payment security.
